High School Graduate with Autism Hosts a Home Ceremony
Kyle Wakefield is a recent Taylor High School graduate. Although some doubted his abilities because of his autism and obstacles in the classroom, Kyle Wakefield proved everyone wrong.
Many graduations have been canceled or moved to virtual ceremonies because of COVID-19, but Wakefield’s mother, Brandi Wakefield, would not give up without a fight. In order to not ruin such a special memory for her son, she planned a special graduation event which was held in the cul-de-sec outside of their house where the special graduate was able to walk across a graduation stage and receive his diploma.
Former teachers, coaches, pastors, friends and family members watched from while Katy Independent School District (ISD) Board Member, Dawn Champagne, gave him his diploma.
"Dawn Champagne is a very good friend and was Kyle’s Sunday school teacher when he was 3 and 4 years old," said Wakefield’s mom to Covering Katy News.
Receiving this diploma showed all of Wakefield’s years of overcoming all the obstacles he was facing throughout the years. It took a lot of time, effort and preparation by going to specialists, therapists, case managers and educators.
"I have been writing my personal stories, and I’m thinking of creating a book," said Wakefield’s mom to Covering Katy News.
"Some advice for parents of children with autism is to not get overwhelmed by the diagnosis, stay focused and put together a trusted team so they can help you with your child to improve their language and social skills. Also, keep aiming high but remember that you will sometimes have it low and remember that you will get there, just at a different pace and maybe on a different path.” said Wakefield’s mom to Covering Katy News.
Wakefield graduated in May 2020 from Taylor High school with a 3.40 GPA and plans to attend the University of Mississippi in the fall. Congratulations to him and all the many other incredible graduates!
