Jaymi Craik is on the autism spectrum and is from Vancouver Canada. She has her own website called JaymisWorld where she posts blogs about her life to try and inspire people to do good in the world. In one of her recent posts she explains her experience of working as someone with autism and why she hopes to be self-employed one day.

Craik shared in the post ‘My Experiences with Work as Someone on the Autism Spectrum’ that when she would go to work everyday she needed to take breaks along the day from what she was doing. She would end up going for a walk or just sitting in the break room. Taking breaks was something very important to her since it would help her rest and recharge to get back to work.

Craik explained that most of the time she gets along with people, but she’s not really a people person. This was a challenge for her because part of her job is to work with a diverse group of people. She shared there were many times that she thought she’s not doing a good job. Thinking this through, she would help rationalize her thoughts by reminding herself if that was the case, someone would have already talked to her about it.

“I’ve always wanted to be my own boss. I want to be able to do things in a way that feels comfortable to me. I want to be successful in my own way and know I worked hard to get to where I want to be. I want to show the world that someone with Asperger’s can build something from the ground up and live a life that has meaning and purpose. I want to be able to do the things I love. I want to work and not have it feel like a job. I want to wake up every day and know that I’m supposed to do what I was meant to do,” said Craik in Yahoo.

Craik writes blogs about her life on her website and on The Mighty to try and inspire others that have autism and try to fit in a world that has a hard time understanding them because they’re just different. Those individuals need to understand that it’s not a matter of fitting in society when they were born to stand out.
