Preparing Parents for a Virtual School Year
It’s that time of the year again: back to school!
During the last half of the school year, students had to stay home and learn their coursed in a new and different way; through virtual learning. Parents already have had a previous experience during the last few months with their kids doing virtual learning. Nevertheless, parents should start thinking of new and improve ways to help their kids adjust back into school mode while still being at home. It’s not absolutely clear when and how schools are going to start, but it is very likely that many kids will continue to learn their courses through online teaching. Because of this, making arrangements for the first day of school is absolutely essential for getting your child’s school year off on the right track.
Below you will find effective and useful tips for parents and caregivers to help their child achieve success in their virtual courses:
1. Have a designated area for schoolwork:
This means fewer distractions and will help them into a ‘school mindset’ when in that area. This designated area can be a spare room or even a corner in a room.
It is very important to use that area only for school.
Make sure this area is quiet and has a door that can be closed.
The area should have a desk or table, and also flexible seating.
It should have enough light so that your child can read and take notes easily
Stock this area with school supplies.
2. Have the appropriate equipment and WIFI connection:
The best way to have a good experience with your virtual classes is on a desktop or laptop where your child can view the lessons full screen.
3. Make a schedule:
Build their own routines so they can manage their time effectively in order to stay on track
Customize your schedule depending on your kids’ classes and needs
Hang the schedule in a noticeable place
4. Create a calendar:
Makes it easier for you and your kid to find what tasks are due every week.
Add non-school activities on the calendar too and that way you and your child can go over the calendar and plan her school days around those extracurricular activities.
5. Keep communication open:
Let your child express their emotions about virtual learning.
Talk to them about how school will be different in the fall, so they can mentally prepare.
Talking about it before they start class will help them start their virtual learning calmer and more confident.
6. Familiarize yourself with the Virtual Learning Platform:
One of the best ways you can offer support on your child is to learn what the platform looks like, how your child is using it and what resources it offers.
If the program provides any guides for parents, take your time and carefully read through them.
7. Build a good relationship with their teachers:
You and your child’s teachers should work as a team to support your child through his or her online schoolwork.
Introduce yourself at the beginning of the course and talk about how you guys can work together to give your child the best virtual learning experience.
If you have any concerns or questions about the course or your child’s progress always reach out to them.

8. Have fun!
Plan off-screen activities with your whole family.
Your child will be at home all day so use that opportunity to bond with each other.
