Young Adult with Autism Overcomes Fears and Chases Passion for Music
19-year-old Mikey Rosemund of San Diego recently experienced one of the most meaningful moments of his life. On August 2, 2022 he saw his favorite band, New Found Glory, perform in person. In the mosh pit of that concert the lead guitarist of the band, Chad Gilbert, gave Rosemund his guitar pick. Rosemund called Gilbert his hero and shared how he broke down crying because of how much this moment meant to him.
Rosemund’s journey with his passion for music had not always been easy. Rosemund was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) when he was five years old. He shared that he often struggled with feeling different than others for a long time and found it hard to fit in at school. Music has been his passion, and he found solace in singing and songwriting. Once he graduated high school, Rosemund began an adult transition program which helped to alleviate many of the struggles he felt in high school.
Despite his love for singing, his biggest fear was performing in front of other people. Upon hearing that, one of Rosemund’s mentors encouraged him to come and play with his band to face his fears and follow his strong fondness for music. That was a decision that Rosemund would pride himself on.
“It felt good to show people what I’m passionate about” he shared in his statement.
Throughout his life, music has been a constant for Rosemund. His bravery and dedication to music have allowed him to continue chasing his dreams. Rosemund explains that his love for New Found Glory and their music has done so much for him, even when he was facing difficult times.
He shared, “Never let anyone stop you from reaching your dream, and never stop being who you are.” Rosemund certainly never did as he continues to chase his passion for music. While New Found Glory is his favorite band, he also loves Taylor Swift and says she has been a hero for him in the music industry. Rosemund is currently taking classes at Palomar College and continues to pursue his talent for singing and songwriting.
