What Autism Taught Us

It can be difficult for everyone, let alone those navigating life with autism, to remember to take a step back from the stress of our complex lives and take a moment to breathe and reflect. So, a few times a year, we like to ask members of our community to give thought to what they’ve learned from autism and to share those lessons with us. Here’s what they had to say this time:

  1. “How to be a better man/father, how to love and understand someone so deeply. Autism taught me how truly wonderful and innocent people are. I love my 4-year-old son, he’s on the Autism spectrum and I’m on the unconventional love spectrum.” –striped_eagle

  2. “That communication is so much more than just words.” –arenee14

  3. “How to see things differently, how to be patient and how to be in and enjoy every moment... love that kid. She’s my heart.” –lisetwinpower

  4. “It’s taught me that my son is an actual superhero!!! He amazes me every day.” –kelli.a.hillard

  5. “Understanding and clarity. Everyone does not think like you and not everyone does things like you. When I listen to my nephews explain things to me, I feel enlightened. I never thought to do it like that.” –sweetsunflower1983

  6. “Tomorrow is full of brand new opportunities!” –3roldans

  7. “Autism taught me that there is always something good and something fun and someone who wants to share that with me every single day. If those things are not happening right now, I know they will be as soon as my students arrive. Do not worry about yesterday, do not worry about tomorrow, do not even worry about the next few hours or even minutes. What matters is right now and my students with autism taught me that.” –socalgrits

  8. “To be patient, that love needs no words, and everyone deserves a voice.” –mhoments.xo

  9. “How every individual is different in their own ways. And each of us has some superpower or, say, super-ability which we excel in, and this is what makes all of us special. And no one can love like individuals with autism do. They have taught me how to love without any expectations!” –rrrriiiyya

  10. “To be who I am.” –j_nemier17

We thank everyone who shared their thoughts with us, and we take this opportunity to remind everyone to build time for rest and reflection into your daily schedules.
