Vans Releases New Autism Awareness Collection
Autism parents everywhere are thrilled with the new shoe designs Vans has released. The new line of footwear was created to cater to individuals on the autism spectrum.
The innovative collection showcases sensory-inclusive features, specifically a color scheme that has calming and neutral pallets. Vans announced on March 11, 2020 that their new line focuses on the senses of sight, sound, and touch. The company has always been known for its trendy, skater fashions and now they are making their products available to a wider range of people. This inclusive advancement was made just in time for Autism Awareness Month!
A press release published by Vans highlights their company’s considerate culture. "Since 1966, Vans has stood as a champion of individuality and self-expression. With this project, Vans celebrates the unique aspects of all people."
Their heartwarming mission has left many parents overwhelmed with emotion. They are finally beginning to see advancements in inclusivity made for their children. Connie LaBouff shared with CNN that she was almost brought to tears when she saw the collection. Her 8 year old son, Logan was diagnosed with autism when he was 3. "He has limited expressive language and has always struggled with shoes," she expressed to CNN
LaBouff shared that it has been extremely challenging to find shoes for him as he’s aged, especially laceless ones since he isn’t capable of tying his shoes
"The single strap hook and loop will allow him to put his shoes on and adjust them to the tightness he personally needs. The reinforced toe means that he will be able to wear a pair he is used to longer without the anxiety of changing shoes." she shared with CNN
