TV Presenter Melanie Sykes Diagnosed with Autism at Age 51
Melanie Sykes is a British television and radio presenter. Sykes was recently diagnosed with autism at the age of 51 years old and been very open with the public about her diagnosis and this experience.
Her son, Tino has autism and he was diagnosed at the age of 3. Recent reports are showing that many individuals go undiagnosed until later on in their lives, such as Sykes.
Sykes shared that she sees her diagnosis as a celebration and event a relief. In an interview with Hello! Magazine Sykes shares, "I'm relieved. It's great to know and I'm very happy about it. Now I know what all my sensitivities are about. During lockdown, I enjoyed not having to go out and socialise, to brave corporate events, shake hands and be pulled in for a kiss by complete strangers.”
This diagnosis comes at a special time because she has been working on a documentary with Harry Thompson, a speaker and writer on autism. When working on this documentary which is about the failure of the education system on individuals on the spectrum, Thompson noticed autistic characteristics in Sykes and suggested she get professionally assessed. Sykes is very grateful and is excited for this journey in her life.
