The Hugbike is an updated version of a traditional tandem bike, which was created to allow people with a variety of disabilities to more safely ride a bike with a caregiver.  While a traditional tandem bike leaves the person in front in control, the Hugbike’s long handlebars allow the person in the back to direct the bike’s path, with their arms wrapped around the rider in the front.  This twist on the traditional tandem bike makes the experience much safer, especially if the passenger is a child or elder.  Both people are able to pedal on the bike, making the experience fun for everyone to participate in.

This unique tandem bike is created by Opera Della Marca Srl, which is being funded and promoted by the Fundation Oltre Il Labirinto Onlus, an Italian non-profit supporting individuals with autism. The project is centered around inclusion, from the creative design of the bike, to the bike’s creation, where it’s partly assembled by individuals with disabilities. This provides them with employment opportunities in an inclusive social environment.

The Hugbike was designed with people with developmental disabilities in mind, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Down Syndrome, but it is also perfect for parents with children looking for a bike that they can ride together safely.

This project is a step in the right direction towards inclusion, both in product design, and in employment.  By making just a small adjustment on a traditional bike design, they were able to make a bike that’s safer for all.  If you are interested in purchasing your own Hugbike, you can fill out a request form here
