After a long year and a half of virtual events, we are happy to announce that the American Autism Association brought together a small group of students for our Ballet for All Kids program in July 2021.

This was our first in-person program since December 2019. This special summer clinic helped practice basic ballet moves, while also helping improve motor, communication, and social skills. The program fosters each child’s unique abilities while teaching the children new skills.

Ballet therapy is very special because it allows students to gain self-confidence, self-discipline, and a joy for movement. It also aims to foster one of the most beautiful things: friendship. The American Autism Association and our volunteers at this program are dedicated to accommodating to all different learning styles including visual, auditory, vestibular, and emotional intelligence. As a result, the needs of each student are met and our volunteers make sure to spend-one-on-one time with each child, while also encouraging them to interact with one another.

A mother of one of our wonderful students shared

“This was [my daughters] first ballet class ever and we absolutely loved it! The second we walked in, we were welcomed with open arms. Such a great feeling! Juliana learned some stretches, foot positions and ballet movements. She did struggle with plié and everyone was so patient in teaching her how to bend a little easier. She keeps talking about ballet class and is looking forward to attending again.”

All of our therapeutic recreational programs offer a plethora of benefits for people with autism. We are thrilled that we got to host an in-person program, and we are eager to have more in the near future.

Thank you to all of our donors that helped make this special learning experience possible. To support our therapeutic recreational programs and other educational initiatives for people with autism and their families, please consider making a gift to the American Autism Association on our website.
